Lake Vathie Bowling Club Big Bowl

The Big Bowl was unveiled in November 1975, 10 months after the Club was officially opened. It was the brainwave of Reg Ellery and Stan Kanaar and constructed by Stan in his workshop under his house.

The huge bowl, said to be the largest in the world, measures 1.907 mm(6'2") in diameter and weighs 2 tonnes. The outer surface is made of 100mm (4") thick cement ( about 32 bags) plastered on to a framework of 75mm (3") water pipe and 13mm (1/2") reinforced steel. The whole of the steel framework is wrapped in two layers of 13mm (1/2") wire mesh.
